Your baby is a bundle of joy; family; friends and acquaintances will naturally want to pay you a congratulatory visit; but you have to device a means of limiting such visits. This period is a time for you to bond with your baby; you need all the time to be alone with your baby. A new born baby is receptive after birth; talk to your child; the child can recognize your voice because she is part and parcel of you.
DRESS YOUR BABY RIGHT
Your baby will not be able to regulate his/her body temperature until after six months of age. You should therefore take cue from this and dress your baby properly. Your standard should be the standard of clothes you are putting on. This applies whether you are indoors or outdoors.
LEARN HOW TO USE THE CAR SEAT
During the first six weeks, there is the tendency for you to travel some distance in your automobile. Your baby must be comfortable during such a trip. It is therefore highly recommended here that you visit the child passenger expert for tips on how to seat your baby properly in the car. This must be done just before child birth. They will help to install the car seat properly.
NURSE YOUR BABY ON DEMAND
Breastfeeding is very important to your baby. The baby needs to latch enough. Number two, you as a mother will want to prevent any form of damage to your nipples. You must know the basics of positioning your child well; the child must be on his/her sides in such a way that the baby’s belly will make contact with yours. He/she must be well positioned to take the center nipple and a good portion of your areola must be in your baby’s mouth. It is strongly recommended that you learn how to latch.
YOUR SUPPLY MUST BE WELL FED
You are the major source of supply of breast milk to your child. Whatever you take in will determine your output to your baby. Therefore, you have to keep the supply flowing; you must never allow any disruption in the flow. Therefore it is strongly recommended that you drink a minimum of eight glasses of fluid in a day. Your calorie needs is a direct function of your age and your metabolic activities; you need to get more calories in your present situation. There are no issues here because as a nursing mother you will lose 1-4 pounds of this in a month.
You may decide to introduce formula to your baby. This becomes necessary when you as a mother cannot breastfeed feed or in the case where you want to supplement breast milk. The available commercial formulas are largely the same; they contain the needed nutrients that your baby needs. Your choice will be determined by your purse. It is however an added advantage if you consult a health care practitioner for expert advice.
YOUR BABY’S POOP
Taking care of your infant can be very scary most especially if you are a beginner. You must take it easy and maintain your composure; you have no option than to act like a pro. Your baby may sometimes pass a meconium. This is a thick black/green substance that your child passes as stool; it is normal, you don’t need to worry about this. There will be variations depending on whether the child is fed on breast milk or on infant formula.
TAKING YOUR BABY’S TEMPERATURE
The recommendation here is the digital rectal thermometer which is the most accurate to getting the precise temperature of your child. Dip the end into petroleum jelly. Position the baby on your laps face downwards and slowly and expertly insert the thermometer into his/her rectum. It must not go beyond the tip. Gently press his buttocks against the walls of the rectal thermometer for about 2-3 minutes. Remove the thermometer. The temperature will be an exact prediction of the state of health of your baby as far as fever is concerned. When the temperature is high; then you have to consult your health care practitioner.
DEALING WITH CRYING
You must maintain your calm when your baby is crying and you tried to pacify him/her without success. Always remember this: It is in the nature of babies to cry. However, you must take diligence to check for the cause of your baby’s crying. If you are breastfeeding, do not panic by changing to a pacifier. Do any of the following whenever your baby is crying:
- Check the baby’s diaper
- Let your child breastfeed / suck your finger / use a pacifier
- Create a womb-like environment; it may be due to cold.
“The golden rule here is: Do not panic!”
